Pine Marten Express busy at Mount Bachelor
July 23, 2004 - The Register-Guard, Oregon - Willamette Pass isn't the only ski area in the central Cascade Mountains to operate one of its lifts during the summer months. Mount Bachelor runs its Pine Marten Express, which goes from the base area to "mid-mountain" at about 7,500-feet elevation. However, the Bend-based ski area does not allow mountain bikes on its lift.  read more

Boarders got a break at Baker
February 07, 2004 - Vancouver Sun, Canada - MOUNT BAKER, Wash. -- About 25 years ago, a couple of skiers showed up one morning at this small ski area in the Cascade Mountains with what looked like small surfboards. These so-called "snowboards" proved to be an excellent way to surf in the mountains and, soon, Baker had become a gathering place for the hardcore snowboard tribe. Today, snowboarders account for 70 per cent of the ski area's lift ticket sales.  read more

Skier , missing for 4 days , found alive
January 05, 2004 - CNN International - SEATTLE, Washington (AP) -- A 25-year-old skier missing for four days and four freezing nights in the central Cascade Mountains was found alive after rescuers spotted his fresh tracks by helicopter. "It's unbelievable -- four tough nights in the teens with no food, no water, just normal ski gear and a helmet," said King County Sheriff's Lt. Jim Fuda. Dan Witkowski was "lucid and talking," Fuda said Sunday night.  read more
