grizzlies awaken early from hibernation, ski hill closed
February 24, 2004 - Seattle Post Intelligencer, WA - NORTH VANCOUVER, British
Columbia -- Two orphaned grizzly bears emerged from hibernation earlier
than expected and made a brief getaway from a wildlife refuge, closing a
popular ski hill, officials said. Grouse Mountain, one of the top
tourist attractions in the Vancouver area, was closed for about two
hours Monday as conservation officers recaptured Grinder and Coola and
moved the two groggy male bears, each about six feet tall, to another
den.

Grouse Mountain may shrug off going to The Peak of Vancouver because
they don't ski, snowboard or snowshoe. But nonsport people take heed:

Record
numbers at some Canadian resorts
January 03, 2004 - The Vail Trail, Colorado - Plenty
of snow and sunshine helped spur record numbers at some Canadian resorts
during the first part of the holiday season, The Province, of Vancouver,
B.C. reports. A marketing director at Cypress said the ski area may
enjoyed its biggest day ever, with up to 10,000 visitors, with similar
numbers reported at Grouse Mountain. Many of the interior and
southwestern B.C. ski areas had all their runs open in time for
Christmas, helping to draw the crowds.

Powder
encounters
December 17, 2003 - Vail Daily News, CO - It was one of
those offers any skier worth his edges tends to dream about: access to
acres and acres of fresh, untracked powder before the hordes from near
and far had a chance to shred it to smithereens. Anybody in the valley
or on the mountain already this year surely has gazed upon the pristine
slopes of Beaver Creek's Grouse Mountain and Larkspur Bowl, wishing,
just wishing they could be airlifted to the top, alone or with a close
companion.
